Wasn’t the reason because they cannot actually calculate how long a battery would last? Personally I hate “time” calculations that are bs. I may be mistaken but I recall reading something about it on planet kde.

It’s ridiculous for suggest this is a Gnome vs. KDE problem. KDE also removes features some users like, such as displaying how long (in time) a laptop battery will probably last. Personally I was stunned to learn the reasoning behind that decision, but the developer in this case really does seem to assume he knows best.

IMHO the real problem in this case is not having more effective communication systems in place. That and very human frailties like frustration, arrogance and ignorance.

Developers of FOSS applications do not owe the users anything. They are often paid for their work, and only the customers of the companies matter sort of.

Please stop this endless whining about every tiny change.

Whoever inventd icons should be put on a rack and stretched. They take up at least 10 times the space of a text name, and I practically always have to wait for the popup text to tell me what the icon stands for. What a useless, absurd, space waisting invetion they are!

> No, users never get to vote on GNOME's design. This is a good thing. Really.

Absolutely. Users will always ask for more features, never less. The intersection of all user feature requests would turn gnome into something that looked like Microsoft Word 2003 with customizable toolbars everywhere.

As an end user, we need to have a little faith that the devs are operating with their users best interests in mind. I was surprised, as many others, when the icons on buttons disappeared (mid cycle too!). When I turned them back on I discovered they were indeed visual noise and turned them back off.

> Sure, it's free and all, and they don't have to do that. But if THAT's their attitude, it's time to fork.

Feel free to, but I don't see that being successful. If you don't like something, don't use it. Just don't go on a crusade like this.

> It's just borderline abuse.

I hardly rate removing icons from menus and buttons (on UI experts' advice) as abuse.
