ANYTHING BUT THE BUTTONS! redux

I was going to write up a post complaining about the new version of Ubuntu moving the close, maximize and minimize buttons from the right-hand corner to the left along with instructions for changing it back but Daviey has already done that for me.

I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again; They can set whatever they want as default. Just give the average end user an EASY and intuitive way to change it to their liking.

gconf-editor is not average user friendly and this type of this is most certainly something the average user is going to want to change back. No matter how much the design team wants everyone to “just get used to it”. I’m getting real tired of designers telling me how I should use my computer.

Other than this major problem, I think the new theme and colors look great. I never disliked the orange and brown theme, but a lot of people did. This should make the OS more appealing to a larger audience.

There's no need to keep them on the left side, it's ugly and impractical. Also the ordering just feels weird. You can change it back to the 9.10 default – http://web-guide.appspot.com/win_buttons . If I wanted an unintuitive OS I would just run Windows.

What is odd for me: that's OK for me to have new look, maybe even new button layouts for new installations. But what made me wondering that I have my _own_ theme, and everything remained after an upgrade _but_ the buttons are moved, and the terminals went into purple shaded ones. I think it's not a good idea to mess existing themes/settings up …

If I wasn't a 'power user', knowing how to edit gconf, and saw the button placement change like that I would probably either switch to Fedora or back to Windows, it is that ANNOYING.

  8. I agree with you completely on the “its my computer” section. I DO like the new look, and I'm trying the new positioning just for grins as I'm testing lucid for nvidia drivers anyway…but this should be an easier “choice” for the user.

This is sad. sad like windows-users-regedit-to-tweak-something sad. Sounds like someone is forcing their GUI preferences on some people. like some company with some fruit in their logo.

  10. Dirk says:

Yes it is a bad decision to move the buttons. I wonder what is the reason for this.

  11. Rob says:

Just as long as they don't change where CTRL+W is, I'll be happy.

  12. Alex says:

Hey who cares if we screw with the habits of the installed user base, a small subset of new users will find it easier, possibly!

  13. Flimm says:

No. Defaults matter. (And this is a bad default.)

  14. “I’m getting real tired of designers telling me how I should use my computer.”
Even a preference to set something like this would be telling people how to use their computer. That's design, creating things for others and thereby dictating how they would use it.

Anyway, Ubuntu Tweak [1] is/will probably be your friend though, or the upcoming GNOME Plumbing app [2]

This nuisance of a configuration editor is one of the primary things that keeps me away from Gnome. There are many things likable about Gnome, but this is one of the very bad shortcomings.
